Allyson McMahon, co-owner of Three Rivers Air & Heat, is passionate about education: “I feel like education is a good solid foundation to start anything in life on the right foot. If people are educated, they are more able to give back. I believe that education helps not only the women who get the scholarships, but the community as a whole.”

To demonstrate her passion, Allyson has been an active member of Professional Women of St. Tammany since 2009. Allyson says, “Professional Women of St. Tammany helps me to leverage my giving to provide scholarships to 15 women; I have considered starting my own scholarship program, but my impact would be much more limited.”

This year, Three Rivers Air & Heat is taking their commitment a step further by donating $5 to the scholarship fund for every ticket sold to the Professional Women of St. Tammany’s “Reading, Writing, and Rhythm Rendezvous.” The event is on July 11, 2014, and tickets may be purchased online at: http://www.pw-st.org/ .

“We [Professional Women of St. Tammany] wanted to do something different; something fun,” McMahon says. “The Reading, Writing, and Rhythm Rendezvous fundraising event is designed to be a fun night out that even a spouse will enjoy,” she laughs.

The event will be held at the Lakehouse in Mandeville, and features entertainment by the Twilight Band, a fun photo booth by Anytime Booths, an open bar, raffle, and more! All proceeds from the event benefit the scholarship program.

Professional Women of St. Tammany is a nonprofit organization that strives to educate, promote and support all women in our community through networking, information, scholarships and workshops.

17 St. Tammany area women received $23,000 in scholarships in 2014. The goal for this year’s scholarship fund is $25,000.

Program Details

Centerplate at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome and New Orleans Arena is looking for dedicated and enthusiastic non-profit organizations to join its fundraising program.  Each season, members of non-profit organizations from the local area and as far as Alabama take ownership of concession stands at both venues to raise money.  One organization raised over $100,000 last season!

Centerplate will provide the following:

  • Exciting events that entice volunteers to work
  • Coordinated scheduling
  • Captured customer base
  • Food products and supplies to sell
  • Training in operations, safety, and sanitation
  • Provide supervision to help ensure success
  • A commission check 4-6 weeks after each event worked

This program provides opportunities for your organization to earn money at a variety of sports and entertainment events, such as Saints and Pelicans games, Essence Festival, Sugar Bowl, and NBA All-Star Game.  We are proud to say that some of our groups have been with us for over 10 years.


Centerplate’s Human Resources department oversees the program.  The mission and goals of your organization must be well-defined and of a long-term nature.  The group must have a strong and committed leadership of 2-4 individuals, have a 501c3 tax-exempt status as defined by the IRS, and a minimum of 10 volunteers that are at least 16 years of age.  Volunteers that work as cashiers must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Consistent fundraising opportunities each year with more than 200 events
  • Earn 10-12% commission on net sales at permanent stands with a base guarantee for events worked

“Little Volunteers” Craft Supply Donations

I am requesting your support for a small project that aims to make a big difference by exposing children to meaningful volunteerism. All I need from you is a craft supply or two…
The Covington Rotary Club will be providing a new, special opportunity for children to volunteer at Feeding the Needy this year. Children will be making cards for the recipients of the 1,500 turkeys that will be distributed to needy families on Christmas Day. The children will also make Thank You cards to be sent to supporters of Feeding the Needy.
I’m working to establish a mini-craft supply collection to hopefully be used this year and in the future to give kids a chance to contribute meaningfully to needy families and gracious donors. This is where you come in 🙂

Letter of Intent Template for Grant Funding Requests

Foundations and Corporations often request a letter of intent from nonprofit organizations seeking grant funding. This is usually the first step in the grant application process. The letter of intent is very important because it is the first impression given to a potential funder. I encourage nonprofits to take the time necessary to write a solid letter of intent that can be modified for future requests.


Elements of an effective letter of intent:

1. Basic information about your organization; particularly 501(c)3 status. Keep it brief.

2. Description of the need for your proposed project or service.

3. Description of how your program or service will fill the need described.

4. A statement about the foundation or corporation’s mission areas with linkage to your proposed project. This is extremely important! Make sure you research who you are requesting money from & let them know that you have done your homework by stating their funding priorities. If your project doesn’t match their funding priorities, look for a different grant source that does match.

St. Tammany Parish – CDBG Grants for Nonprofits now available

St. Tammany Parish Government’s Department of Health & Human Services announced today that funding  is available for area nonprofit organizations. These public service grants are funded by the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG); a program of the US Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD).

Grant applications are due September 15, 2012.

Eligible applicants are established, operating public or private non-profit organizations. Projects must serve residents of St. Tammany Parish (Louisiana) & must address the needs identified in the Parish’s Consolidated Plan. All other requirements are listed in the grant application (click to view/download).

Press releases are still alive; the difference is that now a press release can be published to so many sources – easily and quickly. In order to optimize press releases, consider posting online as well as submitting to traditional media outlets.

What should I post on my blog?

Obviously, it depends. But here are 3 suggestions to get good content flowing:

1. Original content. Linking/re-posting content created by others is usually encouraged, and is almost always allowable. However, publishing articles that aren’t posted anywhere else gives your post a huge advantage. It also works to establish yourself as an expert in your industry.

2. Answers to common questions. What to customers and friends ask you? When people find out what you do, what questions do people ask? For example, I have a friend who works as an auto-mechanic. When I want an honest opinion about something related to my car, I call him. Think about what your friends consider you to be an expert in, and start recording your answers on your blog!

3. Specific, instructional information. “How to change your own oil.” “How to check tire pressure.” To an auto-mechanic, these answers seem obvious. To many of the rest of us, this would be very useful information. check tire pressure
